Roanoke Valley Governor's School is a regional public school for motivated students in grades nine through twelve who want to learn all they can about science, mathematics, and technology. Students come from seven local school districts around the Roanoke Valley. Admission is competitive. Parents do not pay a fee for their students to attend. Costs are covered by the school districts and the Virginia Department of Education.
To be eligible, a student must have satisfactory grades and SOL scores in Algebra I and Geometry classes before starting classes at RVGS in the fall. Application elements also include work- ethic, behavior, and teacher recommendations. In addition, PSAT scores are often requested for admissions.
Students attend RVGS for half of their school day, taking technology-infused science and math classes, along with a research elective. The remaining classes are taken at the student’s homeschool.
SRHS students attend during the AM session. They leave school each day at 7:00 a.m. and return to school in time for 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th blocks. Students return to SRHS to take English, History/Government, foreign language, health/PE, arts, CTE courses, sports, and extracurricular activities.
