Energize Bedford Community Action Coalition Information

The Energize Bedford Community Action Coalition (a community group for which school staff participate) was awarded a grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth with the purpose of addressing and improving the health and well-being of the Bedford community.  The schools play an important role in assisting with improving health and wellness for our students and community.

Grant funds are providing items on the next page for each school in the division.  The Coalition would appreciate if you will please share this information with your staff, parents and PTSA groups.  These items are useful resources for you, your staff, PTSA and parents.

The items will be distributed to your school through your school nurse at their August 7th meeting.  The nurses will provide them to you upon their return to school on August 8th.

Please be aware that as part of our division's Strategic Plan under student wellness and we appreciate your efforts to disseminate these materials/information throughout your school community.

The revisions to the Student Wellness Policy were approved this summer.  The policy and the division's strategy for student wellness encourages all  staff to move towards a healthier school environment and reflect a healthier environment in the decisions made by administrators at the building level.  As the administrator you can set the expectations for our students, staff and parents and be a role model for these changes knowing you have the support of the division's policy and strategic plan.

The items listed below are provided to each school.  Please share this information with your staff, parents and PTSA.  All of these items were provided by grant funds awarded from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth through the work of the Energize Bedford Community Action Coalition and Bedford Community Health Foundation.

Energize Bedford Community Action Coalition is a grassroots initiative made up of interested and engaged individuals, representing various organizations within Bedford County.  The group's goal to become healthier The Coalition hopes this information will be useful resources for your school.

Items provided to each school.  A description is below:

  • Slicers for each cafeteria so that anyone trained to use it could slice fruits and vegetables for parties or meetings.  Slicing fruit makes eating it easier for our students!
  • The Weight of the Nation: Confronting America Obesity Epidemic DVD and book.
  • A 24 x 36 framed health motivational Make the Change poster.
  • A first aid fanny pack for classroom teachers grades PreK-5
  • Let's Party guide book that contains party ideas for school celebrations.
  • Lets' Play Innovative games and activities for children. (elementary)
  • A+ Fundraisers for High School guide book (middle and high)
  • A website with live links to resources on Healthy Alternatives for School Celebrations, Rewards, Fundraisers, and Snacks.
